St Matthew Passion and other concerts cancelled until June 1

Following the measures tightened by RIVM (Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment), the Netherlands Bach Society is obliged to cancel all concerts (including the St Matthew Passion) until June 1. All ticket buyers will receive detailed notice of refunds.

On Sunday March 15, the Dutch government took additional measures to tackle the coronavirus. On Monday March 23, the government decided to extend all measures until June 1. That is why the Netherlands Bach Society had to decide to cancel all concerts until June 1. This means that all concerts of Shunske Sato & Diego Ares, the St Matthew Passion, the Lamentations and Bach & Sandström will not take place.

Did you buy tickets through the Netherlands Bach Society? All ticket buyers will receive detailed notice of refunds. Visitors of performances in concert halls can expect to be notified by the concert halls, concerning restitution.

This exceptional situation has a major impact on our organization. In order to be of service to everyone as quickly as possible, we ask you not to contact us and to keep a close eye on our website.

All musicians and employees of the Netherlands Bach Society deeply regret this situation. We now give top priority to the health of our audience, our musicians and employees and the responsible organization of concerts.

Donate your ticket
As a result of the cancelled concerts, the musicians (independent professionals in the cultural sector) are experiencing a great loss of income. Any form of support to help them is welcome. All visitors receive an extensive email from us about the refund of the purchased tickets. We would appreciate it if you would consider allowing the purchase of your tickets to benefit the musicians and refrain from refunds (in whole or in part).

FAQ about the canceled St Matthew Passion concerts

Why is the decision taken to cancel the entire concert tour?
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, events with more than 100 visitors are prohibited until April 6 at least. To limit the spread of the virus, everyone is asked to stay at home as much as possible. As a result, our musicians cannot rehearse, the soloists from abroad cannot travel to the Netherlands and it is not possible to organize concerts in a responsible manner.

Will the performance of the St Matthew Passion be postponed to a later date?
The preparation time for this project is more than two years in which agreements are made with conductor, soloists and musicians. Due to the high number of people involved, it is impossible to move to another date.

Has the St Matthew Passion ever been cancelled before?
This has only happened once in our nearly 100-year history, in 1945.

I have tickets for one of the performances. Will I receive a refund?
We are currently setting up a plan in which all visitors will be refunded the purchase price of their tickets for the St Matthew Passion. This is an extensive task. All ticket buyers will therefore receive extensive information about refunds at a later stage. The Bach Society will contact you about this. We ask you not to contact us and to keep a close eye on your email and our website.

I would like to call the office of the Netherlands Bach Society. Can I speak to someone?
As a result of the stricter measures, all employees of the Bach Society work from home. Our accessibility by telephone is limited. In order to keep up with the vast amount of work this cancellation brings, we ask you not to contact us and to keep a close eye on your e-mail and our website.

We would be very grateful if you would consider allowing the purchase of your tickets to benefit the musicians and refrain from refunds (in whole or in part).
