Since 2021, the Netherlands Bach Society and NTR Saturday Matinee have been presenting an annual ‘alternative Passion’. This season, the spotlight is on Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – maybe the most talented of Johann Sebastian’s sons.
It is clear that he took good note of his father’s theory lessons. But he goes one step further, presenting a new tonal idiom for his day. The strict formal requirements of the Baroque made way for a lighter, more accessible style with more emphasis on emotion and expression, which is excellently demonstrated in this work. With a great sense of drama, Bach junior sketches a colourful picture of the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus.
