The background

The beauty of differences

“From differences results the most beautiful harmony” (Heraclitus). Artistic leader Johanna Soller opens the season with a programme that embraces conflict. With works by J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, J.C. Bach and Arvo Pärt.

Harmonious concord“

The Ancient Greeks already knew it: contrasts do not necessarily lead to strife. They can actually generate new energy. And music is a resounding example of this, as harmony exists only when different, sometimes even opposite sounds come together. Johanna Soller juxtaposes Baroque compositions about the battle between good and evil, by J.C. Bach and Buxtehude, with the modern work Fratres by Arvo Pärt. This work is the ultimate example of the beauty of differences, with the apparently clashing C and C-sharp alternating in harmonious concord. Along with a cast of leading soloists – Carine Tinney, Alex Potter, Guy Cutting and Matthias Winckler – Johanna Soller celebrates the energy of contrasts.
