In this programme about transience and transition, Bach’s monumental motets flow seamlessly into the experimental compositions of Caroline Shaw and Kaija Saariaho. Two apparently clashing worlds come together under the leadership of the renowned choral conductor Grete Pedersen.
“Singing, breathing and whispering“
Bach’s motets have always been very popular. After Bach’s death, much of his work was not performed for a long time. The motets formed an exception to this and they offered meaning at transitional moments of life, such as funerals. Grete Pedersen supplements the motets with Nuits, adieux (Saariaho, 1991), in which farewell and the transition from night to day are heard as singing, breathing and whispering sounds. In Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte (2011), transition has become a goal in itself. Here, the exceptionally musical transitions tumble over one another playfully.
