28 september - 6 oktober

Dank Bachvereniging!"

Een bericht van hoboïst Emma Black:

"Touring in a group is all about frequencies. The different energy levels of each member changes, naturally, every day, if not every hour. In Tokyo, we experienced so many differing levels, not only amongst ourselves, but also of our audiences. Giving the two concerts to the girls‘ schools were wildly different occasions which I’m sure some of my colleagues have already described, and our performance yesterday in Saitama was a pure joy. The energy of the audience, the frequency of the hall all contributed to a very round and harmonious concert.

Now we find ourselves in Hiroshima. I did not have expectations and I do not mean that in a negative but in a neutral sense, but (please bear in mind this is before not after the concert!) I am finding it extremely peaceful. Maybe it’s the fact that we are palpably in the hills, but the energy is peaceful and very, very welcome.

The end of the tour is fast approaching it seems very sudden and possibly just a little too soon, to have to step back into our European realities and daily routines."

Een bericht van hoboïst Emma Black:

"What does a musician do on one of their precious free days on tour in Tokyo? I cannot speak for others, but I always find myself torn between exploring an exciting new place and practicing for the next concert. As with everything in life, a balance must be found. I think I succeeded!

I started out (after a mini practice session of course) at the Cafe del Ambre in Ginza for a coffee. This place was recommended by a friend who studied here and told me it was her favourite coffee place in the world. I must mention that my friend comes from Vienna, so this is saying something indeed. In a city that is so slick, modern and fast it was a relief to come into this small inauspicious room. A little bit like when you enter a peaceful shrine, which good coffee places are really! Not a coffee machine in sight. Many pots of water cooked to different temperatures and an old style scale on which every coffee portion is carefully weighed. A different taste to what I had imagined, but smooth and invigorating. Exactly the start to the day I was searching.

It was a very promising beginning, so full of momentum, I made my way to the Nezu Museum to see an exhibition of flowers and birds in Japanese art between the 9-16th centuries. The museum itself is wonderful and of course there were plenty of beautiful images that will stay with me for a long time, but it was the gardens of the museum that gave me a sense of the magnitude of the ability to have strict perfection and order metamorphose into a place of peace and freedom. A juxtaposition that, even though I am relatively new to visiting this country, I sense is a goal in many endeavours here.

After wonderful coffee, imbibing the streets, diving into ancient Japanese culture and meditation in the gardens, there awaited me something completely new when I returned to the hotel. Yes, of course, the activity that no trip to Japan is complete without. I speak of course, of the wonders of Karaoke. Honestly, after my day of walking and intake of the city I seriously doubted my ability to be a useful member of the karaoke group, but a little voice inside me insisted that I try this old mysterious art. We assembled in the foyer of the hotel, a little self-conscious and nervous at what was to come, and were conducted into a sterile private party booth. Luckily we were able to adjust the lighting to an appropriate karaoke mood and order some sake.

I haven’t mentioned sake yet, so let me just say that this wonderful elixir has the power to unlock hidden talents and help magically to put ones fears aside. As it is held in such high esteem, we even see its presence at the Meiji Shrine! But, let us return to the karaoke.

It turns out there are a number of great vocalists in the group. Shunske not only plays and improvises to Sinatra on his violin (goodness knows how when it is tuned at 400hz and I assume the karaoke was in 440..) but also sings surprisingly well. Maybe it’s not a surprise to people who know him well, but Marco was a mellifluous and seductive Sinatra. Being as nerdy as HIP musicians can be, we all wanted a good singalong to everybody’s favourite, Lascia che pianga. Astonishingly, it was on the menu. I still cannot get over that! It was here that the “discovery” of the evening was made. Jetske sings like an angel!!! And I believe there is a string possibility that she will be repeating this performance some time in the future.

Of course, we come together every day to talk and to make music together, but getting together and doing something that took us all out of our preconceived comfort zones was a very beautiful experience. Like this amazing city, you never know what is in your midst."

Een terugblik op ons vertrek naar Japan:

30 september
