'Die Geburt, Verhaftung, Kreuzigung und Auferstehung Jesu Christi'. Christoph Graupner did not write that work, but the Netherlands Bach Society does tell the 'whole' story from birth to resurrection in four brilliant cantatas.

If it had been up to the Leipzig appointment committee, not Johann Sebastian Bach but Christoph Graupner would have been appointed Thomas Cantor in 1722 (Telemann had already turned down the job). But Graupner's employer, the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, was only too well aware of the unique talent at his court; he refused to give his consent to the transfer to Leipzig. Graupner did receive a pay rise, however, and thus continued to work in Darmstadt, where an inexhaustible treasure trove of brilliant cantatas by his hand still awaits performance today.

Shunske Sato chose four cantatas to tell the whole story of Christ's life, from birth to resurrection, just as Handel did in his Messiah. A unique opportunity to become acquainted with the fourth German Baroque genius, a composer who undoubtedly deserves a place alongside Bach, Handel and Telemann.
