Close-up Cantates

In the new concert series Close-up Cantatas, the Bach Society zooms in on the heart of Bach’s vocal oeuvre: the cantatas.

A miniature St Matthew Passion“

One of Johanna Soller’s first ideas on taking up the position of artistic leader was this new series. In it, she is championing Bach’s cantatas – wonderful repertoire that is undeservedly less well-known than his ‘big’ works, such as the St Matthew Passion. And yet the cantatas are an absolute match for Bach’s Passions. Indeed you could even see a cantata as a miniature St Matthew Passion. Bach used the same ingredients – arias, recitatives, choral passages and chorales – and the same universal
themes – like farewell, love and comfort – to construct compact miniatures.

In Close-up Cantatas, Johanna Soller lets you look over Bach’s shoulder while he composes. In an open and interactive concert form, the music alternates with explanations of the composition, context and words. And just as in Bach’s day, the audience gets the opportunity to sing along with the chorales.

In this first edition of Close-up Cantatas, the ensemble is performing two cantatas about ‘the end of time’. That was a familiar theme in the seventeenth century, and it is unfortunately still relevant today in our times of climate change and the threat of war.
