 The Netherlands Bach Society is looking for instrumentalists

• For the Netherlands Bach Society’s young talent programme, the Young Bach Fellowship (YBF) we are looking for 1 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double bass, 1 bassoon;
• Applicants must be born after September 1st 1989;
• Applicants must be resident in the Netherlands.

The auditions for instrumentalists will take place on Sunday March 6th and Monday March 7th at the Akoesticum in Ede. The deadline for applications is February 6th  2022.

The Netherlands Bach Society is a professional Early Music ensemble best known for its exciting and inspired performances of 17th and 18th-century repertoire.  We give around 60 concerts a year throughout the Netherlands, Europe and the world.  Our All of Bach project, which features top-quality recordings of J.S. Bach’s works (via YouTube.com/Bach), has attracted millions of viewers throughout the world.

Artistic requirements:
• 
Professional instrumental training (does not have to be completed yet)
• Good technique, musicality and expressive way of playing
• Great interest in and experience with ensemble repertoire
• Affinity with the music styles of the 17th and 18th century
• Quick and flexible (the audition may include playing a piece at sight)
• Independent and expressive

Repertoire requirements per instrument:
Violin:
• 
S. Bach: Largo (3rd movement) from Sonata no. 3 in C major for solo violin (BWV 1005) or J.S. Bach: Andante (3rd movement) from Sonata no. 2 in A minor for solo violin (BWV 1003)
• A fast movement from a sonata of your choice (before 1800 and not by J.S. Bach) with continuo/accompaniment
• S.Bach: 1st violin part of aria ‘Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren’ from BWV 154 Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren

Viola:
• 
S. Bach: Adagio (1st movement) from Sonata no. 1 in G major voor gamba (viola) (BWV 1027)
• A. Hoffmeister: Menuettino from Etude no. 2 (from 12 Etudes for Viola)
• A piece of your choice (before 1800 and not by J.S. Bach), solo or with continuo/accompaniment

Cello:
• S. Bach: Sarabande from one of the cello suites
• Duport: Etude nr. 7
• S. Bach: aria ‘Geduld’ from the Matthew Passion  

Double bass:
• S. Bach: Kyrie 1 from Hohe Messe (BWV 232), on 16 foot instrument
• S. Bach: Sinfonia from Gleich wie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt (BWV 18), on 8 or 16 foot instrument. Use Weimar version (G minor) for 8 foot and Leipzig version (A minor) for 16 foot.
• B. Vitali: a part from Partite sopra diverse sonate (on 8 foot) or D. Dragonetti: a Waltz for solo double bass (on 16 foot)

Bassoon:
• 
Bach: B minor mass, BWV 232, Quoniam, bars 1-15
• Bach: BWV155, first Aria bars 1-5 and 27-33 
• Bach: Orchestral suite 1, BWV 1066, bars 20-32 and 48-71. 

All arias must be played very ‘text conscious’, with understanding of the affect and meaning of the text, and also with articulation, nuance etc., as suggested by the text.

The auditions will be accompanied by Siebe Henstra on organ/harpsichord (pitch is a = 415 Hz).
The audition committee is comprised of Shunske Sato (artistic director of the Netherlands Bach Society) and instrumentalists of the Bach Society.

About the Young Bach Fellowship
The Young Bach Fellowship offers young professional musicians the chance to learn the craft by performing alongside the experienced musicians of the Bach Society, as well as to work closely with and to go behind the scenes of a world-class ensemble.  The fellows will take part in 2 projects per season across two seasons (2022-23 and 2023-24), be assigned a mentor – a musician of the Bachvereniging – as well as receive help and advice in career-building.  They will also take part in special productions and workshops to round out the transitioning towards a full-fledged professional musician.

Violin, viola: Weihnachts Oratoria (4 – 23 December 2022, All of Bach recording 2-4 January 2023), St. Matthew Passion (20 March - 8 April 2023)
Cello: Weihnachts Oratoria (4 – 23 December 2022, All of Bach recording 2-4 January 2023), St.Matthew Passion (20 March - 8 April 2023)
Double Bass: Seizoensopeningproject (22 sept - 9 oct 2022), Matinee, music by Graupner (18-22 april 2023)
Bassoon: Seizoensopeningproject (22 sept - 9 oct 2022), St. Matthew Passion (20 March - 8 April 2023)         

• Participation in 2 projects in season 2023-24: to be decided

Payment is based on the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch ensembles, to which the Netherlands Bach Society is a member.

• Extras
- Kick off workshop on September 14th 2022 with staff members of the NBS including a photo session by a professional photographer;
- Other workshops: to be decided;
- 1 complimentary ticket per production to concerts by the Bach Society (subject to availability)

What do we expect from our fellows?
• 
Participation in the above mentioned projects is mandatory.
• Fellow must be resident in the Netherlands for the duration of the two seasons of the Programme.
