Audience in the midst of the St Matthew Passion

In his final year as artistic director, Jos van Veldhoven presented the St Matthew Passion in TivoliVredenburg in an unusual set-up, with some of the audience seated in between the two choirs/orchestras.

The interaction between the two choirs of the St Matthew Passion thus gained a new dimension (literally) for the audience. Moreover, Van Veldhoven began the performance by getting the audience to join in singing the chorale ‘O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig' as a congregational hymn, after which the St Matthew Passion started for real.
