The background

Enough

Václav Luks is returning to the Bach Society as a guest conductor in a programme about that one universal question: when can you be satisfied as a person? Bach gives an unparalleled musical interpretation of this question in his famous cantata Ich habe genug.

Unfulfilled desires“

Famous composers are only human after all. Bach and Zelenka always yearned for more in their careers, no matter how successful they became. Jan Dismas Zelenka was widely admired, also by Bach. He handed down an exceptionally beautiful oeuvre, created in the bustling city of Dresden – the place to be for a Baroque composer. Yet Zelenka never attained the one position he really aspired to: that of Kapellmeister at the court of Dresden. In his turn, Bach cast longing looks at the city where Zelenka worked, and went all out to get a job in Dresden. The ‘Kyrie’ and ‘Gloria’ – which he would later develop into his Mass in B minor – were intended to impress the Elector of Dresden. And his ‘Laudamus te’ from the Mass in B minor was written with the prominent Dresden violinist and composer Pisendel in mind. But all to no avail: Dresden remained a place of unfulfilled desires for Bach.
