Lamentations

Early in the morning on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, prior to the St Matthew Passion, you can listen to the Lamentations; an intimate concert based on the lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah. In the church, these personal and dramatic biblical texts were traditionally read out in the Holy Week before Easter. The Bach Society has adopted this custom in its Lamentations, which has now become an annual tradition.

The dark Masses of Holy Week“

This year, artistic leader Johanna Soller will lead the Lamentations. She has chosen motets and lamentations from the sixteenth century, by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. We hear only the lower registers – alto, tenor and bass. This subdued tone fits seamlessly with the Tenebrae lectiones: the dark Masses of Holy Week, and the accompanying texts about penitence and remorse.
