Amsterdam, Nationale Opera & Ballet, Grote Zaal
Première | Ticket Sales by Dutch National Opera & Ballet
Dutch National Opera and the Netherlands Bach Society make their first long-awaited appearance together. In a unique interpretation, Bach’s St John Passion is presented through both music and dance.
“Movement and sound“
Right from the start, conductor Leonardo García Alarcón was involved with this poignant, interdisciplinary narration of the Passion story. Along with choreographer Sasha Waltz, he turns Bach’s masterpiece into a poetic and human story about the quest for truth, justice and redemption. Waltz creates a symbiosis between singers, musicians, chorus and dancers, in which movement and sound blend together.
The St John Passion, which Bach wrote a few years before his St Matthew Passion, is regarded as the more dramatic of the two works. Whereas the St Matthew Passion is a reflection on the suffering of Christ and the shortcomings of mankind, in the St John Passion Bach immerses the listener in the emotional final moments of Jesus.
