First LP of the St Matthew Passion

In 1957, the first LP of the St Matthew Passion was recorded by the Bach Society. The recording was made in the Grote Kerk in Naarden.

For the occasion, the police diverted the traffic and chased barking dogs away. An agreement was made with the air force that no fighter jets would take off from Soesterberg during the recording and the programmes were printed on ‘rustle-free’ paper.

Note from Anthon van der Horst to the choir members – probably put in the dressing room in preparation for the second day of recording.
