Programme by M.C. Escher
From 1922 to 1969, the Netherlands Bach Society used standard librettos for the St Matthew Passion. In 1938, M.C. Escher designed the cover of these programmes.
Escher was very partial to Bach’s music. The previous programme design was by E.R.D. Schaap, who also designed the poster for the first performance of the St Matthew Passion.
