During Bach Festival Dordrecht, the Netherlands Bach Society presents a program together with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, one of the most prominent advocates of the harpsichord today.
“A program in which Bach’s orchestral music is connected with a contemporary reflection“
Born in Tehran and educated in the United States and Prague, Esfahani has built an international reputation for his virtuosity and his distinctive vision of the instrument. He made history with the first-ever harpsichord recital at the BBC Proms and has received numerous awards, including a Borletti-Buitoni Award.
Together, they present a program in which Bach’s orchestral music is connected with a contemporary reflection. The Orchestral Suite No. 2 and two Brandenburg Concertos demonstrate how Bach perfected the combination of form, rhythm, and color. In contrast, Serpent by Calliope Tsoupaki is featured: a new work—specially written for Bach Festival Dordrecht—that explicitly enters into dialogue with Bach’s famous concertos and gives his musical legacy a contemporary voice.
