This varied Christmas programme starts in the Renaissance and ends with Bach’s masterly Magnificat.
“A thousand years of Christmas music“
In this ingenious programme, singer and conductor Alex Potter leads the listener via Bach’s early predecessors to his masterly Magnificat. Along this musical path from darkness to light, we hear both the anticipation of advent and the joy of Christmas. Ranging from monophonic Gregorian to radiant polyphony, and from intimate solos to overwhelming tutti, it reaches its absolute highlight with Bach’s magnificent rendition of the Virgin Mary’s Magnificat. In between Bach's music, we perform some Christmas carols that Bach inserted in the first version of the Magnificat, according to the tradition of the time. The ensemble plays and sings not only on the stage, but also in other parts of the church or concert hall, treating their audience to an unforgettable evening.
