St Matthew Passion

The background
St Matthew Passion
We have been performing the St Matthew Passion every year since 1922. This year, guest conductor Johanna Soller is giving her artistic vision of this monumental masterpiece.
“Time and again, the composition speaks to the heart“
At this time of year, there are many places you can hear Bach’s unsurpassed St Matthew Passion: about the suffering and death of Jesus, based on the account by his disciple Matthew and set to music. Time and again, the composition speaks to the heart, from its overwhelming beginning to the resigned final chorus. This time, Johanna Soller takes up the baton with us. She sees Bach’s masterpiece not just as a historical narrative. “The chorales and arias provide moments of rest in the continually advancing story”, says the talented German conductor. “And in a certain way, they also stand apart from the biblical story of the Passion. They speak to us, and they are very relevant to today. The content is intense and personal, and I hope to draw on that in order to move people.”
